Welcome to the Art and Mission of Kathy Poitras
Here you’ll find the vibrant, whimsical, and soulful works of Canadian artist Kathy Poitras. A self-taught painter based in North Vancouver, BC. Kathy’s folk art style evokes the charm of Maude Lewis, while her expressionist pieces echo the dreamlike spirit of Marc Chagall and the decorative elegance of Gustav Klimt.
Her mediums include watercolor, acrylic, appliqué, and hand embroidery—each chosen to bring emotion and storytelling to life.
Over the years, Kathy has sold more than 350 original paintings, along with countless prints and handmade art cards. For a time, she made a living solely from her art, supporting her family of five by selling paintings door to door, exhibiting at shows, and working side by side with her husband, Jack Poitras.
With changing times and the introduction of technology, Kathy and Jack found it difficult to make a living this way and took on temporary work—telemarketing for green charities, helping schools fundraise with Purdys chocolates, and supporting organizations like World Vision and Christian Children’s Fund. Always keeping true to her Mission of creating a better world.
🌿 Artists for Happiness
Today, Kathy and Jack are co-founders of Artists for Happiness, a joyful initiative dedicated to using art as a tool for healing, inspiration, and personal growth. Together, they create workshops where adults and children—can explore their creativity, discover their inner voice, and connect with a sense of purpose.
Kathy continues her lifelong mission: to share wisdom, spark joy, and offer guidance through the transformative power of art.
This work is deeply personal for Kathy. As she reflects on her life’s journey—from raising a family while making art, to supporting causes she believes in, to mentoring others—she’s come to embrace a new role. Not just as an artist, but as a guide, a listener, and a wisdom-sharer.
When asked about her age: "I prefer to use the word Elder rather than Senior to describe where I am in life’s cycle. The word Senior often conjures images that don’t reflect who I am or how I live. Elder, on the other hand, speaks to a stage of life filled with purpose—sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and nurturing others.
"Though I am not Indigenous, I use the word Elder with deep love and reverence for its cultural significance. I recognize that in many First Nations communities, the title Elder is earned through lived experience, wisdom, and recognition by one’s community.
I do not claim to be worthy of that true title—but I find it deeply aspirational. The values it represents—guidance, knowledge-sharing, respect for the natural world, and nurturing the next generation—resonate deeply with my own path."
